The build up was overtaken by a string of apparent leaks showing unreleased footage of the game in action. Rockstar has not publicly acknowledged the clips. Its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, began legal proceedings in a New York court, with filings obtained by BBC Newsbeat demanding that GitHub and Discord hand over the details of accounts sharing copyrighted material. Clips are being removed under copyright claims and several accounts linked to the group have disappeared. The group behind the material claims to be acting in the interests of players. Each release has also invited cryptocurrency donations, which has left most observers sceptical about the stated motive. Stop Killing Games, which campaigns against all digital distribution, called the leaks destructive and urged people not to send money. ## Is it a nightmare or a blip? Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar technical director who worked on GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas, told the BBC it is remarkable that a studio of thousands keeps anything under wraps at all. Once unreleased work leaves a connected environment it is gone for good, because takedown notices remove copies rather than recover secrecy. The only reliable protection for work in progress is to keep the master material somewhere an account cannot reach it." Access granted for collaboration is the same access used for exfiltration. - Plan for the aftermath now. Legal action recovers identities. It does not recover confidentiality. Two official trailers for GTA 6 have been released, the most recent in May 2025. The game remains the most anticipated release of the year. The lesson for every rights holder is that the value at risk was never the launch, it was control of the material before it.
